Chianina in the spotlight

Several events have been set up to spotlight the Chianini. At the same time, these exhibitions contribute to the promotion of the region itself.

“We can distinguish two types of events ,” Giovanni Corti, president of the Amici della Chianina says . “On the one hand we have the events that are focusing upon the animal itself, for example the Mostra Provinciale dei bovini di razza Chianina , which took place in Cortona this year. You can compare these events with a fair, where you can inspect the animals and where the most beautiful animals are awarded .”

“ Other events are spotlighting gastronomy , and introduce the public to the qualities of the Chianina meat. There are also some mixed events, such as Sulle Tracce della Chianina in Umbria , where the visitors can taste the meat, visit some farms and participate in cultural activities.”

Few foreigners

Every type of event has its own type of visitors. The events aiming at the animal itself are usually attended by farmers or people associated with agriculture. The gastronomic events, however, will entice both farmers and people who have little knowledge of agriculture.

“At these events you will meet a lot of different people with a great variety of interests,” Corti says . “Sometimes you may even meet a foreigner, but they are mostly tourists who are on a holiday in the neighbourhood. The campaigns usually don't have any international ambitions but they are rather aiming at the population of the region.”

Mostra Provinciale dei bovini di razza Chianina

The organization Cortona Sviluppo has been setting up this exhibition since 1944. For the last ten years now, the organization has been in the hands of Andrea Vitti.

Andrea Vitti: “We want to revalue
the Chianina and her natural habitat ”

“We organize this event in order to revalue the Chianina and its territory in the Valdichiana,” says Vitti. “Today, the 25 th of March, we are pleased to welcome 19 participants, who bring altogether 75 animals. Only calves and bulls are exhibited and there are three categories of winners. The winner in the category bulls receives 500 euro, the winner in the category calves receives 250 euro and the winner with three prize animals receives 550 euro. Of course they all receive a cup.”

Giovanni Pucci (right) won 2 awards

Giovanni Pucci has already participated in the Mostra Provinciale dei bovini di razza Chianina for many years now and he has almost won every year. “In order to prepare the animals for the fair, we let them out , so that they can get used to the environment. In this way, they don't have too much stress at the final moment. I love to show my most beautiful animals to other people. I'm here today with a few first-rate animals. We will see.” And Pucci's darlings were victorious, scooping two awards.
