Toro
This bull, also called toro , clearly shows the gigantic measures of the Chianina breed. He can easily weight some 1700 kilos and classifies among the heaviest of cattle. Tori are solely used for reproduction. Only the very best male specimen are being bred, after they have been tested in the genetic centre of ANABIC. So the race retains its splendid genetic features.

Bue
For centuries, the Chianina has been used as a beast of burden which worked the land and gave the farmers a chance of survival. Only at the beginning of last century Ezio Marchi started a selection process to make the animals more muscular and give the people more edible food. The genetic centre ANABIC was established during the ‘70s; the animals are still being tested there. The bulls which don't pass the ANABIC selection are being castrated and are called bue . In the past they were used for agricultural labour but since the introduction of agricultural machines they've only been used for consumption. After slaughtering, the bue is also provided with quality labels.

Vacca
Chianina is a meat breed and the female, or vacca , offers more tender meat than the males. With the little milk she produces, she can raise her calves. Gestation lasts as long as with humans: nine months. Each newly-born is being measured and registered. The animal gets a pedigree number, a farm and a provincial code and parental data. Furthermore, each animal gets a name.
