summary of the different quality labels
There are different kinds of labels in order to distinguish the quality of different quality products in Italy. The Chianina-meat is one of those products. Here’s a short survey that can help to distinguish the various labels:
D.O.P.
Denominazione Originale Prodotti
This label is comparable to the I.G.P.-label, the entire production being confined however to a specific region or territory.
The Chianina-meat hasn’t been awarded this label yet but the processing of application has been started.

5R
5 razze
A couple of years ago, the European Community has issued a law that all the meat in Europe should be traceable to the farm or herd the animal came from. Hence it is compulsory to state where the animal was born, was raised and where it was sold. If the meat has a 5R-label, the consumer can be offered more detailed information, such as the day of birth, the name of the farm where it has been bred and the name of the slaughterhouse where the meat has been processed etc.

I.G.P.
Indicazione Geografica Protetta
The I.G.P.-label guarantees that at least one production stage can be precisely located. A piece of Chianina-meat with the I.G.P.-brand assures that the cow is bred in the Valdichiana region.
This label mainly offers a territory and tradition protection.
