Maurizio Botarelli, mayor of Sinalunga:

“Tourists visit Sinalunga to eat”

Sinalunga is a picturesque village in the heart of Tuscany. This dazzling community is lead by the democratic left-wing mayor, Maurizio Botarelli with a go-soft approach. With several initiatives he tries to keep farming liveable.

Maurizzio Botarelli: "Youngsters take little interest in farming"

Is the Chianina “alive” among the people?

Sure. There are only small farms in the region of Sinalunga. Almost all those farms keep the Chianina because the species is very suitable for the region. So the people have a strong bond with the Chianina; especially the older generations, because there simply used to be more farms in former days.

Are you doing something to encourage the local farmers?

We try to help the farmers with some initiatives. At present, we have two important initiatives. One is meant for greengrocers, the other one for meat farmers. Youngsters take little interest in farming, which is a pity. It's hard to rouse interest but we notice that youngsters are captivated by agritourism. Maybe they want to combine both.

What do we have to picture the tourism of Sinalunga?

Basically it is one-day-tourism. People visit a city like Cortona or Perugia and make daytrips to Sinalunga. Here, they can enjoy an exquisite meal and/or do some shopping.

We would prefer them to stay a bit longer obviously. Luckily spending the night at a typical “agriturismo” in Sinalunga has become quite attractive for the last years.

What is the most important trump card of Sinalunga according to you?

Sinalunga is an important crossing of Tuscany . We are very close to the highway have our own motorway exit. We are also a very important economic centre of the Valdichiana. We would like to boost and develop the economy.

Are you a fan of the Chianina meat?

Honestly, I'm more a fish-lover. But once a year I'm tempted to eat a real bistecca fiorentina. Very tasty.
